On Applied Ethics as field of study

Applied ethics is a growing, interdisciplinary field studying ethical issues in different areas of society. It includes for instance social and political ethics, medical ethics, bioethics, environmental ethics, business ethics, research ethics, ethics and technology and it also relates to different forms of professional ethics.

The Master's programme in Applied Ethics (MAE) 

The Master's programme in Applied Ethics (MAE) provides students with the opportunity to study within a special interdisciplinary field, which deals with ethical problems in different areas of society. The programme of study focuses on ethical aspects of medicine, technology, politics and business, and the subsequent aim of the programme is to improve the quality of these practises on a European level.

The programme offers a complementary education on master's level in applied ethics for students already holding a university degree or a professional degree. The aim of the programme is to offer both European students and students from outside the European Union the opportunity to pursue advanced studies in applied ethics

The MAE Consortium

The Erasmus Mundus Master in Applied Ethics is offered by The Centre for Applied Ethics at Linköping University, Sweden (host), The Ethics Institute at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, as well as the Department of Philosophy at NTNU, Norway.

Aims and objectives

The objective of the master's programme is to build and develop the students' ethical reflection and competence through combining relevant theoretical and applied professional knowledge and evaluation of applied ethics. Students will acquire knowledge of the history of ethics and applied ethics, as well as learn of the different fields of applied ethics. Furthermore, they will learn how to identify a moral question and achieve required methodological competence for analysing and solving moral problems.

Expected learning outcomes

• acquire knowledge of ethical theories and different fields of applied ethics,
• develop ability to identify, analyse and critically examine ethical problems and,
• develop capacity to argue for a chosen position in discussions on ethics and applied ethics and to formulate (and advise about) strategies for handling ethical dilemmas in different kinds of social practices.

Mobility

Erasmus Mundus Master's Courses/Programmes require that students visit at least two of the partner institutions in the Consortium during their course of study. This entails that students admitted to the Master's programme in Applied Ethics (acronym 'MAE') are required to visit two of the three institutions (NTNU, Linköping and Utrecht).

Degree

Linköping University, Utrecht University and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology are degree-awarding institutions. The Master's programme in Applied Ethics is a multiple degree programme and each university at which the student has studied will award the degree:

• Linköping University: The students are awarded the degree of Master of Arts (60 ECTS credits) with a major in Applied Ethics - Swedish Magisterexamen i tillämpad etik.
• Utrecht University: The students are awarded the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Ethics.
• NTNU: The students are awarded the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Ethics.
