— About the degree programme

Norway is unusually rich in natural resources such as oil, gas, metals, minerals, and raw materials for construction. Skilled and highly educated professionals have enabled us to utilize our resources in a tough international competitive situation.

A great majority of the value creation in Norway is based on our geological resources. NTNU boasts long traditions in research and education within applied geology. For instance, no other university in Norway offers studies in engineering geology. At NTNU, students may combine geology with technological subjects, and the Master's programme is to a large extent aimed at a career in industry.

The Master's programme will expand your professional basis and provide specialization related to research within one of the following branches in geology:

  • Arctic Geology
  • Environmental and Geotechnology
  • Bedrock and Resource Geology

Further more, this study will provide job-related qualifications within your field of specialization and form the basis for research-related education (PhD programme) . Relevant topics for your master's thesis are listed in the three main branches of study (listed above).

Included in the degree programme are individually selected syllabus, optional courses and an interdisciplinary project known as Experts in Team, making up a total of 60 ECTS credits, and an individual paper (the master's thesis) amounting to another 60 ECTS credits.

Specialization: Arctic Geology  

Arctic Geology is offered by the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS ) — a foundation owned by the four universities in Norway. UNIS offers one-year studies (60 ECTS credits) in arctic geology, arctic geophysics, arctic biology, and arctic technology. Previous knowledge of the different studies and subjects is a requirement. These subjects can be part of a Bachelor's degree. Students may also take advanced courses which can be part of the curriculum for a Master's degree or a PhD as arranged in cooperation with their academic supervisors.

The specialization includes a compulsory part amounting to 30 ECTS credits. The stay at Svalbard usually lasts for to semesters. For this reason, it is common to take more courses from UNIS to fill both semesters.

Spesialization: Environmental and Geotechnology  

Fields: Hydrogeology, environmental geology, engineering geology.
The specialization is composed of one compulsory part of 15 ECTS credits and one optional part of 15 ECTS credits depending on the desired subject combination for the Master's degree.

Specialization: Bedrock and Resource Geology  

Fields: Resource geology, mineral technology, petroleum geology, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, tectonics, structural geology, regional geology, stratigraphy etc.

The specialization is composed of one compulsory part of 15 ECTS credits and one optional part of 15 ECTS credits depending on the desired subject combination for the Master's degree.

Within this field of study it is also possible to specialize in "Natural Resources Management". The students take one compulsory part of 15 ECTS credits and choose one optional part of 15 ECTS credits from "The Natural Resources Management" package.
