Environmental and analytical chemistry
- Specialisation
NTNU is the only university in Norway offering Natural Environment Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry in a degree programme.
The philosophy is that in order to study how chemical substances behave in the environment, high-quality chemical analyses of the water, air, soil, plants, and animals are necessary. Within this course you may specialize in Analytical Chemistry, or Natural Environment Chemistry.
Some of the fields of activity we offer:
- Studies of how metals, chlororganic environmental poisons, radioactive substances, and other chemical substances behave in natural systems (air, water, soil, food chains, and organisms).
- Trace elements’ role in medicine and biology, how these behave bio-chemically and physiologically, and which part, if any, they play in connection with diseases.
- Development of analysis methods for use in among other things environmental monitoring (for automatic and continuous monitoring in particular, which makes it possible to react immediately in case of accidents, and for environmental crime) and for ultra sensitive determination of tracer metals and their chemical forms, which are decisive for the biological effects of the metals.
