Cell biology is the study of the cell as a separate unit and as part of a larger organism. The most important tool for modern cell biology is molecular biology, which deals with the molecular basis of biological activity. This field overlaps with certain areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry.

Master's thesis written in Cell and Molecular Biology involve investigation of human, animal or plant cell cultures in connection with genetic, biochemical, or physiological examinations. In cell and molecular biology one aims to understand the interactions between the various systems of a cell, including the interactions between the different types of DNA, RNA and protein biosynthesis as well as to learn how these interactions are regulated.
