Master of Science, 2 years

Coastal and Marine Civil Engineering

- Programme Components

The MSc programme in Coastal and Marine Civil Engineering takes 2 years of full-time study.

Year 1 - The first year consists of compulsory and elective courses providing the basis for the specialization project, and subjects in the second year related to Coastal and Marine Civil Engineering or Arctic Marine Civil Engineering. The last semester is spent on the Masters thesis (30 credits).

Year 2 - In the second year of study there will be ample possibilities for contact and cooperation with research organizations or industries in the specialization project and in the thesis work.

Specialization options

  • Coastal Engineering
  • Marine Civil Engineering
  • Marine Geotechnics
  • Arctic Offshore Engineering *

* The Arctic Offshore Engineering is a specialization offered to students from Norway and Eastern Europe. Part of the specialization can be taken at the University Center on Svalbard (UNIS ).

Notes:

The master program is of 120 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). All course moduls are of 7.5 ECTS credits. In the first two semesters you have to take 4 course modules corresponding to 30 credits each semester. (» NTNU's grading and credit system ).

Semester 3 - mandatory courses and options

In the 3rd semester students take 2 technical courses, 1 non-technical course, and an individual project of 7.5 credits. Students intending to specialize in Arctic Marine Civil engineering may — with the consent of the supervising professor — take this semester at UNIS, Svalbard.

Master's thesis

In the last semester students write a master thesis during the course of a 20 week period. The master thesis should if possible be completed in co-operation with partner institutions. Students intending to specialize in Arctic Marine Civil engineering may — with consent of the supervising professor — complete their master's thesis at UNIS, Svalbard.
