Delft University of Technology was established on January 8, 1842. TU Delft collaborates with a large number of other educational and research institutes within the Netherlands and abroad and has a reputation for high quality teaching and research. TU Delft is located in Delft and has approximately 2,600 researchers, 15,000 students and 2000 PhD students.

The Academic Coordinator at SOTON is Professor Marcel Stive. He is Professor of Coastal Engineering at Delft University of Technology. His research concerns coastal and estuarine engineering and management, including assessments from local to global scales of coastal impacts and adaptation to climate change. Funding includes the Netherlands research councils and government, the European Union, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Chapter 6 of the IPCC 4th Assessment Report contains 11 references to his publications. Advisory roles concern the Dutch, Vietnamese and Chinese Governments on large scale coastal and estuarine interventions. His latest assignment concerns the coordination of an InterAcademy Council project on global water issues.
