MSc in Light Metals Production is substituted with the new Master's Degree Programme: MSc in Light Metals, Silicon and Ferroalloy Production

Master Degree Programme, 2 years

MSc in Light Metals Production

NTNU has close contact with the light metals industry in Norway and abroad and is the main supplier of graduate engineers to the Norwegian aluminium industry.

Master’s degree graduates from NTNU are likely to establish important contacts that will enhance their future career prospects through our industry seminars and participation in the “International Course on Process Metallurgy of Aluminium”.

Production of light metals based on Norwegian expertise and technology couples energy conservation and environmental protection to value-added products. A two year study programme will give you a solid basis for embarking on a career with interesting challenges.

Does working with people, using the tools of science to produce “green” metals in an even more energy- and environmental friendly way, appeal to you? If you contribute curiosity, interest and dedication, we will provide the rest of what you need to reach your goals. Your future career opportunities are numerous restricted only by your own ambitions – you may become the CEO of one of the large companies in process industry or you may pursue an academic track. In between, there are many other possibilities.

The master programme in Light Metals Production lasts for two academic years. The compulsory courses may be supplemented with optional courses that better fit your background and your interests.

The first year will provide you with the necessary background in materials science, electrochemistry, thermodynamics and production of light metals. In addition, you will be taught the experimental techniques needed for the project and your thesis work. At the end of the second semester you will participate in our annual “International Course on Process Metallurgy of Aluminium”. This course attracts professionals world wide enabling you to make personal contacts that may be valuable in your future career. Our Industry seminars will also offer such opportunities and professionals from industry will give seminars on topics that provide perspective and width to the training we give you.

The third semester provides some specialisation through the project work and this continues through the work with the MSc thesis in the fourth semester. The MSc thesis corresponds to four months full-time work. The topics for the project and the thesis are closely related to current research projects at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
