Frequently asked questions:

ADMISSIONS and REQUIREMENTS

  • Which high school / secondary school courses are mandatory for admission?

Most of the 5-year civil engineering programmes have a language requirement. In addition, both Mathematics (R1 and R2) and Physics 1 (Reform 94: 3MX and 2FY) are mandatory for applicants with a Norwegian educational background. A grade of 4 or better is required for admission to NTNU’s civil engineering programmes. For more details about requirements see: http://www.ntnu.no/studies/degree_students

  • How do I apply to the civil engineering programmes?

Norwegian speakers with a Norwegian educational background can apply through the centralized processing centre: Universities and Colleges Admission Service (Samordna opptak). The application deadline is April 15. Other applicants please see: http://www.ntnu.no/studies/degree_students/applications

COURSES

  • Which courses will I take in this programme of study?

See “programme components”, in the menu to the left, for an overview of the programme’s structure and courses.

HOUSING

  • How can I find a place to live in Trondheim?

You can place an ad in the local newspaper Adresseavisen, or you can apply for a student room through the student service organization SiT (Studentsamskipnaden). Additional information and suggestions can be found under “Living in Trondheim ”.

ENGINEER VS. CIVIL ENGINEERING

  • What is the difference between an engineering degree and a civil engineering degree?

In Norway, the most significant difference is that the civil engineering degree (sivilingeniørutdanning) has a more theoretical content than the engineering degree (ingeniørutdanning). Job tasks and responsibilities can overlap in smaller companies, but civil engineers are often awarded bigger responsibility in the larger companies. Jobs within research and teaching in Norway often require a civil engineering degree. Read more about the types of master’s degree offered at NTNU here:www.ntnu.no/studies/degree/masters

SALARY

  • How much can a civil engineer expect to earn?

It depends on where and what kind of job you get. See Tekna for an index of wages.

PROGRAMME CHANGES

  • Can I change my programme of study after I have been accepted as a civil engineering student?

Yes, you can. The easiest way is to apply through the Universities and Colleges Admission Service the following spring. Another possibility is to apply for transfer to a different programme. The deadline for transfer applications the first Monday after teaching begins in the fall semester, and January 15th in the spring semester.

COURSE EXEMPTIONS

  • I have completed a similar course at another university/college. Can I get an exemption for these courses at NTNU?

Yes, you can apply for an exemption if you have successfully completed similar courses from another degree programme.

STUDY ABROAD

  • Can civil engineering students take parts of the civil engineering programme abroad?

Most Norwegian students take a semester or a full year abroad.
