PhD programme in Sociology
The Department of Sociology and Political Science offers a first-class PhD programme which prepares the candidates for careers within research and teaching in leading educational institutions, and for careers where a high level of competence and analytical skills are required. PhD candidates in Sociology at NTNU are given the opportunity to be at the forefront in this field of research, with regard to both theory and methods. The candidates will learn to independently appraise the adequacy and application of various methods and processes in research and scientific development projects.
The education is prescribed as 3 years, including an organized academic training component and a PhD thesis. The courses that are included in the academic training will give the candidates a more extensive training in the theory of science, theoretical perspectives and methodology, providing a deep and comprehensive understanding of the subject as well as contextualizing it. The thesis usually consists of 4 articles published in acknowledged, peer reviewed journals.
The PhD study is a researcher education. Most candidates work within research and development, for instance at NTNU and Sintef. Persons with a PhD are also valuable for businesses that actively make use of research results.
