Marine and maritime research
Marine and maritime research is one out of six strategic research focus areas within NTNU. These thematic areas have been established in an effort to strengthen the cross-disciplinary research between relevant faculties and departments.
A wide range of research groups are involved in the strategic area. The multidisciplinary research activity within NTNU Marine Coastal Development is organised into three primary, interacting domains along the value chain:
1. Ocean Space Research
- Marine surveillance and communication systems
- Energy from the ocean
- Marine ecosystems
- Eco-toxicology
- Marine archaeology and cultural history
- Coastal zone development and infrastructure
Contact: Prof. Geir Johnsen
2. Fisheries and Aquaculture
- Aquaculture engineering (cage mariculture and recirculation systems)
- Sustainable marine aquaculture and societal aspects
- Biological basis of marine aquaculture
- Marine harvesting technology
- Sustainable fisheries
- Social strategies of fisheries
Contact: Ass. Prof. Jo Arve Alfredsen
3. Marine Resource Processing
- Raw materials for high value products
- Processing engineering and tailoring
- Genetic resources and biopolymers
- Energy efficiency
- Design methodology for sustainable systems
- Value chain management
Contact: Prof. Turid Rustad
In addition, the following cross-domain research targets have a particular focus:
- Renewable energy from the ocean
- New marine bio-resources
- Sustainable development
- Equipments for aquaculture, fisheries and aquaculture
- Instrumentation and systems for mapping, surveillance and research
- Recruitment to the marine domain
SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture acts, on behalf of the SINTEF Group, is the strategic counterpart to the NTNU Marine Coastal Development Consortium.
