Department of Research and Development (AFFU) runs extensive clinical research in collaboration with clinical departments at St. Olavs hospital and several hospitals within the Health Region of Central Norway.

The Research unit for Adult psychiatry and substance abuse (NTNU) is integrated with Division of Mental Health Care, St. Olavs hospital. Together, these two units form the Department of Research and Development (AFFU). This "twin department" comprise co-workers affilated either or both, at St. Olavs hospital and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

AFFU is part of a network of local-, national- and international researchers which participate in collaborative projects, transmission and dispersion of knowledge. Throughout the research process AFFU offers counselling, supervision and education. The research group runs a variety of education program for researchers (ELF).

Department of Research and Development (AFFU) is located at NTNU Campus Øya, St. Olavs hospital and Østmarka in the city of Trondheim.
