– Programme structure

The department's objective is to graduate candidates (masters in technology) who are highly qualified for management, research and development positions within the chemical industry. The study programmes in Chemical Engineering aims to provide a general introduction to industrial process chemistry and technical implementation.

The courses are divided into the following groups:

Chemical Engineering only Common for all students of the MSc programme in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

A specialisation is chosen in the 5th year. The specialisations are available within the following research groups at the department:

  • Catalysis
  • Colloid and Polymer Chemistry
  • Process-Systems Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering and Reactor Technology
  • Biorefinery and Fiber Technology

It is possible to choose a project of either 15 ECTS or 7.5 ECTS. If a 7.5 ECTS project is chosen, an additional 7.5 ECTS course must be chosen. Read more about the specialization projects/courses here.


Master thesis

The master thesis is often written in relation to a current research or industrial project. The close co-operation with SINTEF chemistry and PFI operations often lead to SINTEF and PFI researchers acting as co-supervisors for final year projects.

Every year we receive suggestions for master thesis from our contacts in the industry, several of these come with an offer of a summer job as well. There are also good opportunities to carry out thesis projects overseas/abroad.
