Victor André
About
Background
Victor André joined SFI CASA in Spring 2019 as a PhD Candidate. He studied Mechanical Engineering with the specialisation in Automotive Technology at the Technical University Dresden (Germany). In summer 2018 he wrote his final thesis titled “Modelling and Simulation of Deformation and Failure of Aluminium” at the Department for Crash-Simulation at the AUDI AG in Neckarsulm (Germany).
Research
His PhD project with the title “Behaviour and modelling of multi-layered joints” is part of SFI CASA and is linked to the research programme Structural Joints. The design of future car bodies involves several structural materials such as steel and aluminium alloys. To maximise energy absorption under impact while retaining the cars structural integrity, these materials must be placed and combined at the right places. This design philosophy implies that multiple parts made of dissimilar materials will have to be joined together. To fulfill vehicle safety requirements, knowledge and methods for predicting the strength and ductility of multi-layered connections are therefore mandatory to enable reliable car body designs.
The aim of this project is to provide a fundamental understanding of the behavior and failure of multi-layered joints as well as numerical methods to account for these characteristics in large-scale crash analyses. When involving multiple materials, the number of potential combinations is extremely large. To reduce the need for physical testing of those connections, detailed numerical analyses (mesoscopic models) in combination with artificial intelligence tools, are applied. Using this numerical framework, the necessary knowledge for developing reliable crash models (macroscopic models) will be generated.
