Meals at the kindergarten as a social and educational arena

The purpose of the article is to contribute with new empirical knowledge about the cultural and social aspects of food and meals in the kindergarten. The research questions are: How does the lunch meal in kindergartens function as an area for socialization and learning, and how do the employees perceive their duties and roles in meal situations? The theoretical perspective is taken from the theory of socialization and the model learning. The case study has been carried out in two kindergartens and consisted of individual interviews, group interviews and observations of meal situations. The results show that the staff were concerned about their responsibility as role models for the children during the meal, but solved it differently. Adult roles ranged from supervising the children to social involvement in the meal situation.


Since the 1960s, parents have been expected included in the care of their hospitalized children

The first Norwegian nursing textbook that argued for the parents’ right to visit their children in hospital was published in 1941. The first nursing textbook to argue for the parents’ right to participate in the care of their hospitalized children was published in 1968. From 1987, Norwegian nursing textbooks have advocated full parental participation when children are in hospital. In this article, we present results from an analysis of the inclusion argumentation in Norwegian nursing textbooks and we discuss the ideological and political context that made such inclusion ideas possible. We have argued that the inclusion argument occurred because it may be in the child’s best interest, and financially beneficial to society that parents were together with their hospitalized children. The analyses are done based on the French philosopher Michel Foucault’s theories on disciplinary technologies of the self.


Late modern picture book in kindergarten

The article demonstrates how the late modern picture book can be seen as a reflection- and expression of tendencies in the late modern society as described by sociologists Anthony Giddens, Jon Arne Vetlesen and Finn Hjardemaal, emphasizing children and childhood. The article shows how these Books reflects these tendencies, but also designs and produces a child and a childhood. Finally, the article contextualize the late modern picture in the kindergarten as an educational institution, and discuss its role as crossover-literature, for children and for employees. 


Pedagogical leadership and the early childhood center as a learning organization – critical issues and possibilities

The Ministry of Education and Research provides guidelines for the early childhood sector through Competence for the future early childhood centers. Strategy for competence and recruitment 2014–2020. One of the focus area is Pedagogical leadership – the early childhood center as a learning organization. In this article, I will elaborate on how this focus area can be understood in the contemporary social context. The article opens up to highlight the significance of leadership and why leadership has become a central area in early childhood. Further, different concepts of leading are discussed where critical issues and possibilities are emphasized in light of leading a learning organization. More specifically, instructional leadership, distributed leadership and hybrid leadership are highlighted. The article argues that hybrid leadership could be a way of managing professional and managerial accountabilities in leading a learning organization.
