Language research encompass many different subjects ranging from language system to language usage, as well as the development of language in society to language development in human beings.

Research topics include: Theoretical syntax, Phonetics, Semantics/pragmatics, Language documentation, Dialectology, Second language acquisition, Language contact, Language mixing, Linguistic identity, Experimental methods in language research and Language problems and language impairments as well as research on signed languages and interpreting.

Applied linguistics has a strong tradition for action research into written and oral communication in various contexts. Research is carried out at the Centre for Academic and Professional Communication (SEKOM).
