Engaging science: Exploring the enactment of ELSA in bio- and nanotechnology ”

Trondheim, 19-20 February 2015

Organizers: Knut H. Sørensen, Heidrun Åm & Gisle Solbu, Centre for Technology & Society

In the last call of the Research Council’s ELSA programme, the project “Performing ELSA. Governance of and governmentality in biotechnology and nanotechnology research (PerformE)” was funded. In February the PeformE project members invited their international partners and other colleagues to Trondheim to take part in the project’s start-up workshop. The main objective for the workshop was to gather scholars working on ELSA/RRI related subjects, give an insight into the research conducted in today’s scholarship, discuss challenges and what future research questions should be asked. The first day of the workshop was mainly devoted to the international guests and to a general discussion of ELSA related concerns. On the second day, presentations of the PerformE project’s background, project design and preliminary results, as well as discussions on future research plans were central elements. You can find a short summary of the presentations here.

The topics that were covered in the presentations, as well as the discussions that followed, showed an uncertainty concerning the do-ability of implementing ELSA/RRI components in scientists’ research practices. On a policy level we witness an increased attention regarding responsibility and societal goals, but how these goals can be successfully taken up by scientists and translated into the daily work of scientists is an area of concern that needs further exploration. There is no obvious, or easy, road to implementation or to understanding under what conditions ELSA so far has been or can be effectively enacted and in what manner “big words” like responsibility steer science. Rather, such questions must be investigated empirically.

Engaging science: Exploring the enactment of ELSA in bio- and nanotechnology

Workshop, Trondheim, 19-20 February 2015

This February we invite you all to join us at the PerformE start-up workshop. Together with our international partners we want to discuss the enactment of ELSA and reflect on ‘doing society and emerging technologies’ with a focus on scientists and innovators. Discussions on the PerformE project's future research plans will also be a central element of the event.

Please find the programme here.
