Introduction:

The industry of Mid-Western Norway is highly internationalised. Many businesses within this region operate on markets with a high degree of global competition. Møre and Romsdal county is the third largest exporting county in Norway, measured excluding petroleum-based products (¿traditional¿ sector). The county is the leading Norwegian industrial county within fishing, aquaculture, seafood processing and seafood sales. Møre and Romsdal county accounts for approximately 20% of the total seafood export from Norway. The marine industrial sector is therefore of great importance and contributes to securing regional population and industrial development. The maritime cluster in this region consists of about 200 firms, has a turnover of about NOK 50 billion and employs approximately 20 000 people. The maritime cluster (ship design, shipyards, component supplier, related IT, etc.) is concentrated in this region, thus representing a national centre of industrial importance. This maritime industry represents 25% of the value creation in Møre and Romsdal with most of the business located in the Sunnmøre region which Ålesund city is centre of. Furthermore, an industrial cluster of furniture producers is also located in the fjord regions of Sunnmøre where almost half of all Norwegian furniture industry is located.

In spite of this region's strong globalisation, this is the region's first master's degree in management studies specialising in international business. Recent studies show that both the private and public sector of this region are in demand of competence in international business. Recruiting personnel with advanced competence in international business has proven difficult in Møre and Romsdal. Towards 2025 this demand for advanced business management competence is expected to increase greatly.

The profile of the study in international business and marketing seeks to enable candidates to develop a holistic business view and to actively participate in cross-functional teams in globalised organisations. All teaching is in English.

Prerequisites include a completed three-year basic degree (bachelor level) within business management fields in compliance with the Norwegian national council for business management studies (part of The Norwegian Association for Higher Education Institutions). A more precise list of prerequisites is found in the school's enrolment policy. This also specifies rules for prioritising students for enrolment. Furthermore, policies are provided concerning enrolment based on practical experience, the use of title, etc.

 

Aims and Goals:

The main objective of the master's degree study is that students acquire knowledge, skills and general competence about international business and marketing so that they develop to become international, customer and market-oriented businesspeople with a responsible attitude towards colleagues, customers, partners and society in general.

The study provides opportunities for careers in both private and public sectors of society as well as in national and international organisations. The study is especially directed towards international activities in different branches of industry (seafood, maritime, furniture, etc.), but still provides competence useful in the public sector. The candidates are provided competence so that they may choose to work in Norway or abroad. They may also find work at different levels in the organisation including corporate management. The study accordingly opens up for different career paths.

The study qualifies for PhD-level studies. Enrolment in PhD programmes is however dependent on the enrolment policy of the institution offering PhD-level studies.

For the Møre and Romsdal region the study aims to provide knowledge resources anchored in a dynamic and competitive regional industry (especially seafood and maritime sectors) that operate internationally on a global market.

The study is adapted to needs of regional industry and will therefore primarily be marketed in this region. The study still aims to be of interest on a national and international level.
