Course content

The course is given as a one term course each year during the spring term, with reservations related to the professor´s sabbatical leave or similar arrangements. Basic knowledge within Traffic engineering and Traffic planning is needed.
The topic Traffic flow comprises traffic flow theory, analysis methods, evaluation criteria, statistical methods, data collection technologies, information technology and control of private and public transport on macro and micro level. The other main topic is Traffic safety and risk management. Man-machine interface problems are treated related to the possibilities and the limitations following new technology.

Learning outcome

The goal is to provide the student with extended knowledge of the mechanisms of the traffic system performance, and an understanding of the possibilities and demands related to modern traffic control and traffic safety.

Learning methods and activities

The aim is to lecture the course with colloquiums and/or as a guided self-study. The mandatory exercises include oral and written presentation of a paper in a common seminar for other students, teachers and researchers. Lectures and exercises will be given in English for students in this course who do not speak Norwegian.

Course materials

The reading list is decided for each course. A basic source is "Revised Monograph on Traffic Flow Theory", Transportation Research Board (TRB), 1999. In addition, the list may include other textbooks, articles and lecture handouts.
