Course content

This course will address issues of cultural and social relevance, drawing on methodologies and concepts from sociolinguistics and/or translation studies and/or historical studies and/or literary studies.
A more detailed description of the academic content will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester.

Learning outcome

Candidates who have passed this course will
- be able to reflect on the intersection between society, culture, history and/or language.
- have knowledge of specific English-speaking societies and their unique societal, cultural and/or sociolinguistic traits.
- be able to write independent analysis using relevant theory and secondary materials.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.

Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

Compulsory assignments

  • 1 skriftlig innlevering (ca. 1500 ord)

Further on evaluation

The exam must be answered in English. Information about which dictionaries students are allowed to consult during the exam will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester.

Course materials

Students should make every effort to attend lectures as the exam may test knowledge of concepts that are not discussed in the course materials. The reading list will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
