Course content

FILM1104 is a base level course that deals with cinema and television in the Nordic countries. The course is taught in English, and the student gains insight into trends and developments in contemporary Nordic film and television culture.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course the student will have:
- knowledge of contemporary cinema and television in the Nordic countries, with attention to cultural, artistic, and commercial contexts.
- knowledge of popular and critical reception of contemporary Nordic cinema and television, both within the region and beyond.

Skills
Upon successful completion of the course the student will know how to:
- identify and discuss important trends and developments in contemporary Nordic films and television series.
- relate their acquired knowledge to questions concerning Nordic culture, society and history.
- develop independent analyses of contemporary Nordic films and television series.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and screenings. Teaching is conducted in English.

Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.

The final course assessment consists of a 3-day home exam, where the student completes a written assignment of 3000-4000 words.

Course materials

The course reading list is about 600 pages, plus the screened full-length films and television episodes.
