Course content

FILM2002 is an undergraduate course in film studies that further develops the student's understanding and application of film theory and film analysis. The course is located at the end of the bachelor program and is also preparatory for students who will proceed to the master's program.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course the student will have:
- deeper understanding of the fiction film's techniques and modes of expression.
- knowledge of various types of fictional forms and genres.
- knowledge of selected positions in film theory.
- knowledge of selected approaches to film analysis.
- insight into the possibilities of pursuing a master's degree in film studies.

Skills
Upon successful completion of the course the student will know how to:
- apply different film-analytical methods.
- conduct advanced, independent film analyses.
- present film studies-related issues to others.
- reflect on film-theoretical arguments.
- reflect on the consequences of approaches and theory choices.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, screenings and seminars, including supervised training in film analysis. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English.

Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.

Compulsory assignments

  • Oral presentation during the seminar and approved thesis statement for the final project

Further on evaluation

The final assessment consists of a semester project of 5000-6000 words and an oral examination. Each of these sub-evaluations is given a separate grade, and the two parts are equally weighted. Both sub-evaluations must be passed. In case of failure / repeating, both sub-evaluations must be resubmitted. It is not possible to re-submit a project with the same argument, the student must provide a substantially revised argument in the next attempt.

Required previous knowledge

Specialization (a minimum of 60 ECTS) in Film Studies or Film and Video Production.

Course materials

The reading list for the course is about 1200 pages, plus the screened full-length films and series episodes.
