Course content

FM3003 is a theoretical media studies course. The course instruction is research-based, which means that topics addressed in the course will vary according to the research interests of the teaching staff.
Students will gain valuable insight into theoretical approaches and research methods. as well as the communication of current research results, which will be useful as they embark on their own research for a master's thesis.

The course is currently taught by members of staff working in the fields of either Media Ecology or Sound Studies. Depending on staff availability the course will focus on one out of these two research fields.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon a successful completion of this course, students have
– deep insight into a specific research area or topic within media studies.
– knowledge of the relevant methodologies an theories of this area and its place within media studies
– increased understanding of ongoing research at the Department

Skills
Upon a successful completion of this course, students are able to
- understand and discuss the methodology and range of this specific research field
- discuss and assess research literature and findings in light of theories and methodologies relevant to the specific research field

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminars,screenings and tutorials.

More on assessment:
The final assessment is based on an individually written essay of between 6000-8000 words, as well as an oral presentation of the essay.

The essay is assessed by a letter grade, which may be adjusted after the oral presentation.

Students will be set an additional compulsory assignment associated with their essay, further information will be provided by teaching staff.

Students are required to keep updated on relevant information from the department or course director via It's learning.

Filmvitenskap (MFILM)
Medievitenskap (MMVIT)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the Master's programme in Film and Media Studies or admission to the Master's programme in Film- and Video production.
