Course content

This course builds on FON1134 Statistics for Phoneticians or Research Methods I. Students are taught to apply methods learned in FON1134 or Research Methods I through the use of computer statistics programs. In addition, practical skills will be enlarged and earlier knowledge will be deepened. Central to the course are phonetic issues that the students encounter in their own experiments and in the literature.

Learning outcome

After the course the participants:
- have obtained a more thorough understanding of and experience with the quantitative analysis of experimental-phonetic investigations
- are able to use computational tools to perform statistical analysis
- are able to interpret results of the statistical analysis of phonetic data

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, group instructions and exercises with supervision. The course may be taught in English or Norwegian, depending on who is teaching it.
Mandatory exercises must be approved before the student may sit the take-home exam.

Compulsory assignments

  • 3-6 laboratory exercises

Further on evaluation

The size of the take-home exam depends partly on the subject, but is usually between 8-12 pages (line spacing 1.5). If the candidate does not pass the exam there is no need to deliver new assignments in order to qualify for another first retry.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
