Course content

The course gives an introduction to theoretical and historical perspectives and approaches specific to film studies.

Learning outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have knowledge of:
- film studies as an academic discipline
- the relationship and mutual influence between the theory, history, and analysis of film

The students will develop skills including:
- identifying theoretical traditions within film studies and important developments within theory over time
- the ability to reflect on the relevance of film theory when analysing and interpreting films
- the ability to discuss different currents in film theory regarding film as it is related to knowledge, experience, and perception

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminars, screenings.

Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director via Blackboard.

This course is taught in Norwegian or English.

Compulsory assignments

  • Oral presentation with written documentation.

Further on evaluation

The final assessment is based on a letter-graded 3-day take-home examination with a total length of 2000 - 3000 words on a given topic.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Film and Videoproduction (MMPROD)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the Master's programme in Film and Video Production.
