Course content
The emphasis is placed on the themes social change in the Global South, development theory, North/South relations, systems- and ideologies of aid. The course explores the questions what development is; how is development understood in different theoretical approaches; global distribution of social goods; What is the meaning of globalization in Development? What kind of consequences do different discourses and globalization have on management and distribution of resources and social goods? All students must write two individual assignments during the course. Both assignments must be approved before writing the exam.
Learning outcome
Upon completion of the course, students should have the ability to show critical knowledge of:
- How development thinking has developed over time.
- How development may be defined and analyzed in different theoretical positions.
- Global inequalities and consequences for such inequalities for the Global South.
- Different practices, motivations and dilemmas in development collaboration.
- The relationship between local and global processes in a development context.
Learning methods and activities
16 hours lectures. Prepare group presentation. Supervision of assignment.
