Course content

GEOG3053 Discourses of Development and Globalization is an introductory theory course, dealing with fundamental issues of development and globalization and how development and globalization are related. Different theories and key concepts will be introduced and examined with respect to development challenges of our times, such as poverty alleviation and growth, migration and mobility, livelihoods, marginalization, rights, civil society and participation. The course draws on a wide range of practical and empirical knowledge, as the lecturers represent different areas of specialization within the social sciences.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The students shall gain knowledge on how development and globalization is understood in different schools of academic thought. The specific objective is to gain insights into how globalization is linked to development challenges in the global south.
Skills: The course provides insights into different analytical approaches to understand development and globalization.
General competence: The course provides basic competence for the candidates’ research work as well as preparing them for work in international organisations and aid agencies.


Learning methods and activities

Lectures, 20 hours and assignment.
It is expected that compulsories and examinations must be completed in English. Exceptions must be clarified with the lecturer responsible for the course.

Bachelor in social science. Other relevant qualifications can be accepted upon approval by the Department of Geography.
