Course content

Microstructure, properties (mechanical, electrical, thermal, magnetic and optical) and application of materials (Metals, polymers, composites and ceramics) Fabrication, selected processes in forming, joining and coating Materials and sustainability

Learning outcome

The candidate:
- has knowledge of structure, properties (including mechanical, electrical, thermal, magnetic and optical properties) and applications of selected metals, composites, polymers and ceramics and can suggest and discuss material selection in selected applications - has knowledge of selected processes for forming, joining and surface treatment of materials and be able to describe and compare these -knows research and development work in the development and use of materials and can find and process relevant professional literature - can use relevant data tools for selected material technology issues, such as CES Edupack and Python - can plan , carry out and disseminate project work in material use, participate in professional discussions and use innovative techniques - can prepare and carry out laboratory work and document the work in written reports-has insight into and can discuss material use in a sustainability perspective

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises, project, laboratory work. Expected time consumption: Lectures: 50 hours Lab work: 30 hours PBL: 30 hours Exercises: 20 hours Own contribution: 70 hours Total: 200 hours

Further on evaluation

All compulsory work requirements (exercises, laboratory work and project work) must be approved to take the final written examination. Project work must be approved to submit project report. Information about requirements for the number of approved exercises and details of mandatory activities will be provided in the project work at the beginning of the semester.

In case of re-sit exam, written exam may be changed to oral exam.
Voluntary repeating of the final written exam is possible, but not the project.

For applications for crediting, approval and integration of courses from previous years or other institutions' equivalent education, each application will be dealt with individually and the applicant must be able to count credits for overlapping courses.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Materials engineering (FTHINGMAT)

Required previous knowledge

Access to the course requires admission to the study programme Bachelor of Engineering, Materials Technology, NTNU, Trondheim (FTHINGMAT).
