Course content

Overview of methods for small group research. Quantitative and qualitative analysis. The SPGR instrument is used as example. The factoranalytical model with some of the most frequent used statistics in the field. Practical application in research and consulting. Ethical issues. Role of consultant. Feedback and application at individual, group and organizational level.

Learning outcome

The position of the course in the PhD program:

The course is for all PhD students at IØT studying team and group processes as part of their thesis.

The course will give the candidate knowledge:

On how groups function, how different dynamics develop and how polarizations and other pattern in groups can be recognized. In addition the candidate will get an understanding of what it takes to develop teams and groups.

The course will give skills in:

Choosing the most effective and efficient methods for the actual research question, and how to use these methods in practical settings. Both methods for direct observation and peer-ratings are presented emphasizing SPGR.

The course should in addition give:

Knowledge to evaluate the psychometrics of exiting methods and skills in using such methods in consulting.

Master degree in organizational theory, sociology, psychology or related background.
