Course content

In Norwegian cultural heritage management, building conservation is a central theme. It is therefore necessary with knowledge of building history, knowledge of collecting and creating information about buildings and insight into relevant challenges in building conservation. Through varied activities, the course aims at giving a basic theoretical and practical introduction to building conservation.

Learning outcome

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The candidate

  • has basic knowledge of conservation theory applied on building conservation
  • has basic knowledge of building history in Norway and of the history of building conservation
  • has basic knowledge of terminology on buildings and carpentry as part of their skills to acquire services from experts

Skills

The candidate

  • has basic skills in building measuring and evaluating building conditions
  • has basic skills in collecting and assemble information about buildings
  • has the ability to execute a larger project based on group work
  • is able to produce a written report on building documentation and discuss related cultural heritage issues.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, seminars, excursions, field work. The course is based on six concentrated sessions, the majority in the second half of the semester. In order to deliver the final assignments in this course, students must pass three obligatory assignments. Active participation is required to accomplish the course.

Further on evaluation

The course requires active participation in fieldwork and excursions and has three submissions that have the assessment approved/not approved. Two are individual climbers, the third can be either individual or group work. The course has a final assignment based on fieldwork and literature. The project work is carried out in groups of 3-5 students and has the assessment passed/not passed. The textual part of the project work should have a length of 6-10 pages.

Required previous knowledge

No mandatory prequalification.

In addition to a reading list material in connection to excursions and field work, which can vary from term to term, will be distributed.
