Course content

This course provides intermediate level knowledge about archives and collections in archival repositories and museum’s collections. The main parts of this topic cover the challenges related to the long-term preservation and dissemination accessing of digital artifacts or materials. The course focuses on the following main topics: basic theory, academic and legal framework, and strategies for long-term preservation. The lectures also cover topics related to the safety and security of digital archives and collections.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The student understands the fundamental properties of digital archives and digitized collections, has basic knowledge about digital or e-signatures (digital authentication mechanisms) and encryption, and has knowledge about social media. The student knows about the different strategies for long-term digital preservation, and has knowledge about work processes related to conversion and integration between different file formats.


Skills: The student is able to discuss Norwegian and international standards on electronic archives, and can discuss issues related to digital or e-signatures and encryption. The student can explain different strategic choices related to methods for long-term preservation of digital archives, and can discuss safety and security issues related to the protection of materials in digital repositories. The student can explain file format (data representation) issues related to long-term preservation, schemes, or forms evolution (the change of data representation over time).

General Competence: The student can utilize their knowledge and skills – and thereby design routines or instructions related to archives management. The student also can participate or contribute in establishing best-practices for the management of collections in archival repositories and museums.

Learning methods and activities

A combination of lectures, seminars and assignment related seminars.

MANDATORY WORKING REQUIREMENTS: Students who do not get their qualification assignment approved at the first attempt, will have one week to deliver a new and improved assignment.

Mandatory work requirements are assessed with approved / not approved.
