Course content

The course gives the students insights on theories and research traditions in industrial design. It will also give support to develop an individual research design for the students' concrete "research-case". This includes the ability to understand which methods are appropriate for the particular work, how to classify and give preference to the single approaches and how to integrate them in the doctoral project.
The course-content covers a theory of science introduction for design, qualitative and quantitative methods and central design research methods. The course will further give an overview of the most relevant supporting methods such as protocal analysis, discourse analysis, interviews, activity theory, affordances etc.
In addition, the course will give an introduction in how to write papers for scientific journals.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The candidate is able to put his/her own research activities in the context of design research inside and outside the department and can relate it to both content as well as research methodology.

Skills: The candidate can interpret and assess different approaches in design research in the context of his/her own research objectives.

General competence: The candidate has knowledge of design research and methods relevant to his/her PhD research. He/she is able to define research questions, and identify and use relevant literature. Further the candidate is able understand the conditions and requirements for writing an academic paper.

Learning methods and activities
