Course content

The course is a research course in methods of qualitative and post-qualitative analysis. The generation of data is included as a theme, but the main focus will be on the idea of and craftsmanship involved in summarizing, analysing and interpreting data. Course participants work with their own data material in the course assignments.

  • has in-depth skills in critically evaluating and applying qualitative and post-qualitative analysis as a craft and can demonstrate these skills in a concrete analysis of their own material

  • is able to read and comment on other researchers / peer’s choice of analytical method as it relates to material and problem statement

Learning methods and activities

The course consists of seminar-based teaching in the form of lectures, discussions, and student presentations. There will be two seminars: the first extends over two days; the other lasts a single day. Students work both individually and in study groups with the course literature and their own empirical data. Students are expected to use data related to their own research. Requirements for attendance at the class meetings: 80%. Three work requirements must be completed before a student can deliver his/her exam. During the second seminar the participants present their choice of method and how it can be used to analyse their data material for fellow students and an instructor with a fellow student opposing. Guidance both oral and in writing will be given at the seminar by the fellow student and the instructor.

  • Opposition to fellow student's presentation / assignment
  • One written paper with oral presentation
  • Attendance 80%

Further on evaluation

Individual essay. The examination is a reflective academic essay about different possible ways of analyzing own empirical data. Literature from the syllabus must be used.

Required previous knowledge

Master's degree or equivalent. PhD students are prioritized upon admission. Students are expected to use their own empirical material Admission restrictions*: The course is limited to a of maximum 25 students, where 6 spots are reserved for applicants from other institutions affiliated with NorTED (www.nor-ted.com).
