Course content
The course will focus on how social institutions have responded to what are, in many countries, the relatively new challenges of multiculturalism and diversity, in areas such as social integration, service provision and employment. Examining the ways that immigrants and refugees incorporate into different areas of receiving societies, the course will also discuss the relevance of concepts that have begun to dominate the field, such as multiculturalism, diversity management, segmented assimilation and transnationalism.
Learning outcome
The course aims to: (i) expand students' understanding of American, European and Scandinavian perspectives on integration, multiculturalism and transnationalism; (ii) provide students with opportunity to compare, contrast and use analytical tools provided by these perspectives; (iii) deepen students' research skills and foster their critical thinking.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, seminars, presentations by the participants, discussions. Before the course, participants will be asked to submit a draft version of a paper (approximately 3000 words) within the area of immigration, integration and ethnic diversity. During the course papers will be presented and discussed. A final version of the paper (approximately 7000 words) must be submitted for final approval after the course. The course may be taught in either Norwegian or English.
The course is offered when teaching resources are available and not less then 5 persons are registered
