Course content

The course starts from two introductory lectures: 1) introduction to biobased economy + lecture about industrial revolutions and their role in the biobased economy, 2) world, EU, Norwegian state and Innlandet strategies towards sustainable development and biobased economy.


Then the course is divided into three parts: green, blue and white.

"The green part" includes two lectures: 1) forest industry and biomass from forest in the Norwegian biobased economy, 2) agriculture industry and biomass from agriculture in the Norwegian biobased economy.

"The blue part" includes two lectures: 1) fish industry + aquaculture and biomass from these industries in the Norwegian biobased economy, 2) farming of marine plants and role of this biomass in Norwegian biobased economy.

"The white part" includes two lectures: 1) biofuels, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, 2) wastes + bioplastic.

In the course students also get acquainted with the work of the biggest Norwegian bio-refinery Borregaard and plant breeding company Graminor.

In the following lectures of the course you will watch and discuss also two documentaries - 1) about food industry and 2) about wastes and fashion industry.

Several guest lecturers from different companies that are working in the field of biobased production are also invited to the course.

This course was designed specifically about Norwegian biobased economy with the focus on the regional biomass from the forest industry.

Learning outcome

- Understand the interrelations between sustainability and biobased economy
- Learn analytical tools to explore business opportunities within biobased economy, especially regionally and nationally, but also internationally
- Acquire skills on how companies can use sustainability as a business strategy to gain competitive advantages.
- The course provides knowledge about how to stimulate emerging markets within the bio-economy, and could point to weaknesses with traditional resources in the community.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
