Course content

The course focuses on innovation and creative exploration of new digital technologies - and how they are used to solve current and / or future tasks in the construction, construction and facility management (AEC/FM)-industry. The student will gain insight into principles for product and process development to solve specific tasks. Students will work closely with software developers and companies / organizations in the construction industry to develop new products or services (processes) to solve current or future tasks related to information systems. This will be demonstrated / documented by developing a business model for a proprietary digital product /service.

- relevant technology for digitizing the AEC/FM-industry.

- prepare a business plan for the development of digital technology
- prepare an implementation plan for digital technologies related to specified tasks for a particular (type) organization / customer group
- use methods for systematic testing of digital technologies related to specified tasks in the AEC/FM-industry

- Identify key elements that characterize innovation management
• identify technological, organizational and economic challenges related to the development and implementation of digital technologies in the AEC/FM-industry
• demonstrate the use of new digital technologies and work processes for solving existing / future-oriented tasks in the AEC/FM-industry

Learning methods and activities

The course is conducted as project-supported and problem-related learning. This includes lectures, exercises, self-study, group work and discussions, as well as case studies in real-world tasks in the construction, construction and infrastructure industry. Emphasis is placed on discussions and cooperation between participants and initiatives above the industry. The main part of the project report is conducted in groups of 3-5 students.
Dissemination and guidance is carried out mainly online. A start-up session is being planned at NTNU Gjøvik, as well as a study trip to companies in the Oslo area.

The course will be conducted as compressed teaching modules in the middle and last part of the spring semester (taught after TBA4415, and in some parallel with TBA4410).

If few students, the teaching will be blended learning; combination of teaching at Gjøvik, online teaching and guidance.

Further on evaluation

Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.

Course materials

The course is project-based and problem-based, ensuring that the literature relevant to the completion of the project assignment is chosen by the student in cooperation with the supervisor of the course coordinator.
