Course content

Carbohydrates and polysaccharides. Amino acids and chemical structure of proteins. Enzymes, kinetics and mechanism. Carbohydrate metabolism. Principles for energy transfer in living cells. Lipid metabolism including biosynthesis and degradation of fatty acids. Nucleic acid structure, replication, transcription and protein biosyntheses.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
-The student can present the structure and function of the biochemically important molecules carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins.
-The student has basic knowledge of metabolic processes such as glycolysis, the citric acid cycle and the electron transport chain.
-The student has basic knowledge about DNA synthesis (replication), synthesis of RNA (transcription) and protein synthesis (translation).

Skills
-The student can carry out simple biochemical experiments.
-The student can communicate results from biochemical laboratory experiments in simple reports.
-The student can communicate key concepts both written and orally

Lectures and exercises. Mandatory laboratory.
