Course content

First and Second law of thermodynamics. Equations of state, reversible and irreversible processes, entropy, thermodynamic potentials. Maxwell's velocity distribution, mean free path, heat conduction, diffusion. Boltzmann distribution.

Learning outcome

By a theoretical and experimental approach this course will give the student a basic understanding of how systems in thermal equilibrium can be described by thermodynamics. This means to understand how the first and second law of thermodynamics lead to the quantity entropy og give relations between quantities of thermodynamics. Further the principles of heat engines and refrigerators, mixtures, energy transport by heat conduction, and diffusion of particles in a medium will be given. The student will learn to analyse various types of problems within thermal physics by use of mathematical methods including the use of IKT-based/numerical methods through the use of Matlab.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and compulsory laboratory excercises and problem solving. A compulsory lab report counts 10% of the final grade. A re-sit examination may be changed from written to oral.

Compulsory assignments

  • Calculation exercises
  • Laboratory exercises
