Course content
Electrostatics, method of images, multipoles, electric fields in matter. Magnetostatics and magnetic fields in matter. Electromagnetic force and induction. Maxwell's equations. Conservation laws for charge, energy, momentum and angular momentum. Electromagnetic waves. Transfer matrix theory for thin films. Electromagnetic fields in waveguides. Potential theory and Gauge transformations. Radiation from dipoles and charges in motion. Theory of relativity.
Learning outcome
The candidate has advanced knowledge of phenomena, computational methods, and technologiacal applications based on classical electrodynamics. The candidate has acquired increased skills in analytical as well as numerical methods.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and problem solving. Compulsory programming project with written report. The re-sit examination (in August) may be changed from written to oral.
