Course content
Production and transport of natural gas and the use of natural gas requires an integration of several disciplines, and the need for the engineer's comprehensive approach is clear in the natural gas industry. Following themes are covered: Gas market and resources, gas properties, gas reservoirs and wells, transport of gas, field development, project economics, industrial use, environmental considerations and gas fired power plants.
Learning outcome
Ingress:
The student shall have knowledge about the production of natural gas from reservoir as well as processing and transport in pipelines to user; that is, the natural gas chain.
Knowledge:
The student shall have an understanding of the main aspects of the natural gas chain from reservoir to user. Available resources, reserves and markets in Europe and world-wide shall be included in the student's understanding. The student shall understand the use of natural to production of electrical power and liquefied natural gas. The environmental benefit of using natural gas instead of other hydrocarbons shall be included in the student's understanding as well as the main principles of carbon dioxide capture and storage. The student shall have good understanding of the production of natural gas, compression in processing and for transport, removal of water, water vapour and sour gases, avoidance of gas hydrate as well as specifications of sales gas.
Skills:
The student shall be able to decribe the interactions between natural gas technology and the development in societies need for cleaner energy supply. At the same time the student shall be able to carry out simple calculations of temperature, pressure and flow rate in reservoirs, wells, process equipment and pipelines. Furthermore, the student shall be able to carry out basic calculations involving energy forms.
General competence:
The student shall know how to obtain and work with materials for use in a technical report that fulfulls normal requirements in terms of content and technical writing.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and guest lectures. Exercises which count for 30% of the final grade. If the teaching is given in English, the examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. If there is a re-sit examination, the form of assessment may be changed from written to oral examination.
