Course content

Leadership and occupational psychology:
- motivation, communication, the role of perception and feelings in decision making, group psychology, and administration of personnel.

Safety, Health and Environment (SHE): Rules and laws that are prescribed for health and safety, safety culture, influence of national culture on safety precautions, plans for action in a crisis on boead. Assess occupational healt and safety risks.

Understanding culture: The content of culture (values, norms, symbols etc.). Understanding how religion, art, nature, time, space, and food influence one's self-understanding and national self-image related to the maritime safety culture. Geerd Hofstedes classification system is used to analyse and describe patterns of national cultures: individualism/collectivism; power distance; uncertainty avoidance; and masculinity/femininity.

Learning outcome

Kunnskap:
- Provide basic knowledge about central concepts of SHE, team leadership and understanding culture
- Provide knowledge of laws and rules appropriate to safety .
 
Ferdigheter:
- Relate SHE, team leadership and understanding culture to other fields covered within the bachelor study programme
- Understand how the human and cultural factors can affect safety and leadership
- Use theory, models and constructs within the topics covered in the course

Kompetanse:
- Understand and respect culture-patterns behind one's own actions as well as that of others
- Use knowledge about and develop attitudes in relation to safety and leadership (in relations to different cultural contexts).

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, problem solving, group work, and oral presentations.    

Mandatory assignments:
A required group project must be approved before the candidate can sit for the final exam in the course. Previously approved mandatory assignments do not need to be handed in again for later exams.

Further on evaluation

3 hours written exam.Approved exam with 80 % attendence in the course, a certificate documenting the SHE basic course (40h course) will be issued.
