About Dance studies (NO-MA-DS)

This programme is an opportunity to get the most updated knowledge of past and present dance types such as folk and street, ballet and modern, ballroom and club dance. You acquire skills in analysis of dance as bodily movement, aesthetic expression, tradition and interpretation of music.

The programme has intensive periods of teaching and academic supervision. Hence, you do not have to move to Trondheim in order to be a student of the Master’s programme. In order to attend the intensive periods of teaching, we recommend short stays at NTNU and at the cooperating institutions.


The application procedure is different depending mainly upon your source of funding and whether or not you have a Nordic citizenship.

Job Prospects

Master of Arts in Dance Studies will be relevant for building a career related dance in teaching at many levels, different public sectors in governmental organizations. This may include policy and planning for dance as part of cultural policies and safeguarding actions in ministries and institutions which work with various aspects of dance, both locally and internationally.

Study environment

During the intensive periods of teaching, you will get in contact with other students and staff both at NTNU and at the cooperating institutions. You gain access to large archives of audiovisual dance and music material, and the programme hosts evenings for social dance.

Programme components

The Master's programme in Dance Studies is a two year full-time study of 120 ECTS credits. The courses are structured around intensive periods of teaching and academic supervision.

The learning outcome is divided into knowledge, skills and general competence. It outlines what you will have achieved when you complete the study programme.
