Study Management of Demanding Maritime Operations

NTNU is the only institution in the world offering international Master’s Degrees in Management of Demanding Maritime Operations. You will be training in leading maritime simulators, and students benefit from close connections with nearby innovative enterprises situated in one of the world’s most advanced and complete maritime clusters.

After decades of improving the performance of technical systems it is now obvious that one crucial part of any operation, the human being, has partly been neglected. This master program will put the human interaction into focus in demanding operations, with emphasis on the complex operations to support the installations of subsea field equipment.

It is a great challenge to plan and execute an operation to be both efficient, safe and environmentally friendly. Simulations of such operations are already being utilized to improve the planning of operations, to identify potential risks and to train the operative personell. This master programme is closely linked to NTNU's R&D activities on simulation of marine operations. In particular, the emphasis of the programme is placed on the leadership of such demanding operations.

Experience-based option

You can either take this master's degree programme as a discipline oriented master degree (120 ECTS) or as an experience-based master degree (90 ECTS).

The experienced-based master's degree programme offers a practical approach for marine officers, shore-based personnel, and executive and operational managers within other operational organizations, in search of deeper knowledge within management of demanding operations. There will be a focus on integrated operations, e.g. between the bridge and on-shore personnel, between personnel from different organizations between personnel in operation at different time periods.

Focus on leadership and management

The program is oriented towards leadership effectiveness, with special attention on influence strategies that lead to superior performance regarding safety and effectiveness issues. Leadership theories will be reviewed and evaluated to help you understand the complexity of modern practical leadership. Furthermore, modern leadership in connection with identification of strategies based on objectives and barriers, and guidelines for monitoring and control of the operation, will be discussed.

Another topic of the program will be on management challenges when an organization is exposed to risks. Anyone responsible for or participating in an operation should be conscious both about the risks facing the operation and the risks the operation is creating itself. Well-founded and often inexpensive measures may, if implemented early enough, save values which otherwise could have been lost.
