Nature is declining globally, and we need more biological knowledge in order to understand and predict effects from human activities and a changing environment. Today’s climate crisis and rapid extinction of species has created a need for sustainable development, which in turn makes a pressing need for knowledge and research within the study of biology.
The Master degree in Biology contributes to NTNU’s strategy “Knowledge for a better world” and the United Nations vision to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The two-year International Master in Biology offers a practical and theoretical study of living organisms and how they interact in changing environments. Biology studies are essential to solving the challenges concerning effects of climate change and human activities on biological diversity and ecosystem services. When you choose to study biology in Norway at NTNU, you can play an essential role in solving challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, towards a sustainable exploitation and use of natural resources. It will also help us to maintain the global food supply and improve human health and well-being.
You have access to dedicated supervisors and research labs with cutting-edge instrumentation when you opt to study biology in Norway at NTNU. Studying with us means that you may do your fieldwork at our field stations on the Norwegian coast and in the Dovre Mountains, or as far away as Tanzania and Svalbard. Or you can do laboratory experiments to study how plants and animals are adapted to their environment and how they respond to environmental changes.
English is the primary teaching language in all our Master courses. Supervision of the Master projects are by the Department of Biology and Department of Natural History, and often involve co-supervisors from other research entities such as NINA or SINTEF.
By taking the Master in Biology, this is what you can cover:
- Molecular methods for cloning genes
- DNA sequencing for parentage analysis
- Genetic variation in wild populations
- Analysis of complex genomic and metabolic networks
- Physiological measurements in wild and captive organisms
- Captive breeding and artificial selection
- Field and laboratory experiments on terrestrial and aquatic plants and animals in environments ranging from the arctic to the tropics
- Analysis of environmental effects on organisms, variation in population dynamics, species distribution and phenotypic plasticity
- Theoretical modelling
Do you want to study biology in Norway at NTNU?
Please read the requirements carefully, as you need a relevant background for the specialisation you have in mind. Admission to the MSc programme in Biology requires a Bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent 3-year education) in Biology (minimum of 80 ECTS credits biology courses). In addition, applicants must have basic knowledge in chemistry, statistics, and mathematics.
Admission to the different specialisations requires a Bachelor’s degree that is relevant for the specialisation in mind:
- Cell and Molecular Biology
- Ecology, Behaviour, Evolution, and Biosystematics
- Biodiversity and Systematics (Nordic Masters)
Graduates of the Master in Biology are internationally qualified for a wide range of positions in public and government institutions. You can work for directorates in counties and municipalities, or various ministries. With a Master’s in Biology, you may also obtain a position in the private sector as a researcher or adviser in consultancy agencies or environmental research institutes and industries. If you take one year of practical pedagogy, you will also be qualified to teach in secondary schools. You may also progress further to a Ph.D. in Biology.

You’ll find the Department of Biology based at the Gløshaugen campus, where you will have access to excellent facilities and state of the art scientific equipment. We have strong teaching and research links with other science and technology departments at the university. The campus has an excellent location, being close to Trondheim city centre.
