Although antecedents of the University existed that, in some cases, went back to the mid- 19th century, UPC itself was founded in March of 1971 and was originally known as the Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona. UPC is a public university that specializes in the fields of architecture, engineering, merchant seamanship, economics, health sciences and applied mathematics. The University has approximately 2,800 teaching and research staff, 33,000 students and 3000 PhD students. Its location is at the Mediterranean north east Spain.
The Academic Coordinator at UPC is Professor Agustin Sánchez-Arcilla. PhD in Civil Engineering. He is Full Professor at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in the Department of Hydraulic, Maritime and Environmental Engineering (DEHMA). He is the Director of the Laboratory of Maritime Engineering (LIM/UPC) since 1990. His research concerns oceanographic and maritime (coastal and harbour) engineering, sediment transport and morphodynamics and climate change. He promoted the creation of the International Centre for Coastal Resources Research (CIIRC), of which he is the current Vice-President. He has published over 15 books and over 100 research papers in national and international journals, supervised 21 PhD theses, and taken part in more than 30 European research projects.
