The study plan consists of one part that is specific for the PhD programme in Sociology, and one common part shared by all PhD programmes at the Faculty of Social and Educational Science.

Please make sure to register all your courses. Together with the faculty, the department is responsible for ensuring that all registered courses are included in the Common Student System (FS). The training component comprises three elements which in sum should amount to at least 30 credits:
- Scientific Theory
- Research Methods
- Theory
You can register for courses via Studentweb by 15 September for the autumn semester and by 1 February for the spring semester. PhD candidates do not pay a semester fee.
Candidates at other institutions who wish to take courses at NTNU apply via Søknadsweb. See more information for external PhD candidates.

The faculty offers a number of PhD courses and a common subject in science theory: SFEL8000 Theory of Science in Social Science.
