Intensive Care Nursing

Picture of students at NTNU

The further education programme in Intensive Care Nursing provides you with competence in exercising intensive care nursing and delegated medical treatment to acute and/or critically ill, injured or newly-operated patients. This implies continuous monitoring, care and medical treatment in a high technology environment in close collaboration with other professional groups. This is to maintain the patient's vital functions and/or prevent complications, or to facilitate a worthy death if treatment does not succeed.

Programme Structure

The programme covers three semesters, all of which contain theoretical and practical courses. The theoretical courses are organized in periods of 9-11 weeks. Between the theoretical periods, there is supervised practical studies of 9-12 week duration. The programme makes use of a variety of teaching methods; lectures, group work, PBL, skillstraining and simulation.

The practical training will take place at various intensive care departments, critical cardiac care wards, postoperative departments and pediatric- and neonatal intensive care units at St. Olav's Hospital. The hospitals in Levanger and Namsos are also relevant internships.

The theoretical part of the programme is divided into five subjects, which together account for 45 credits. Four of these are common subjects, while the fifth is linked to the nursing specialty.
