Lean designs for carbon dioxide subsea injection systems - SUBPRO-Zero
Lean designs for carbon dioxide subsea injection systems
Short summary of the project
Nowadays, designs of CO2 subsea injection systems are based on standards and technology developed specifically for oil and gas, which are often conservative, complex and costly. The overall objective of the project is to explore new optimal designs and materials for subsea CO2 injection systems, considering operational variations in pressure, temperature and flow and safety requirements. This will hopefully lead to the development of lean CO2 injection systems that are cost-effective, safe and fit for purpose. Several aspects will be considered such as: structural integrity, compatibility of materials, cost-effectiveness, safety, testing requirements, maintenance, and availability. Some issues of interest are alternative compact designs for well construction and completion, and subsea piping, simpler and with less interfaces taking into account alternative barrier and testing philosophy, pressure rating, and the use of alternative materials. Other points of interest are development of decision-support tools for early phase development of CO2 storage fields and pipe networks for transport of CO2.
