FJORDLAB – full-scale ocean experiments and research

About Fjordlab

Fjordlab provides national research infrastructure for full-scale ocean experiments and research. Fjordlab consists of various ocean-based and land-based laboratories, and is located in Trondheimsfjorden, around Hitra and Frøya, and in Ålesund.

At Fjordlab, we research, develop and test underwater robotics, underwater installations, autonomous ships and ship operations. Fjordlab activities also involve fish farming, the development of seaweed and kelp into food products, environmental measurements and environmental monitoring, safety and general knowledge about what goes on in the ocean.

Fjordlab is important for full-scale testing and its laboratories also research and test ocean monitoring sensors, both for marine environment observations and for emergency preparedness relating to offshore infrastructure.

Fjordlab builds on existing laboratories such as AUR-Lab (Applied Underwater Robotics Laboratory), OceanLab Observatory, Sintef ACE and the national test site for autonomous vessels

These laboratories have been upgraded through the OceanLab project funded by the Research Council of Norway.
