DIVERSEA TAKES MARINE BIODIVERSITY TO WATER
At the beginning of the summer 2026, DiverSea has been taking marine biodiversity science beyond the research community through a series of Sailing4Science outreach activities in Sweden, combining sailing, exhibitions and conversations about the importance of understanding and monitoring our coastal seas.
On 7 June, DiverSea joined a sailing activity in Stenungsund, Sweden, organised for Ukrainian medical personnel from Repower, with support from Stenungsunds Yacht Club and Stenungsunds Sailing Association. An open-boat exhibition presented the DiverSea 2025 expedition, giving participants an opportunity to discover the project’s research and learn more about innovative approaches to marine biodiversity monitoring. Around 70 people took part in the activity.
The outreach continued on 16 July in Svanesund, where DiverSea was part of a Sailing4Science exhibition bringing together local residents, sailing enthusiasts and community organisations. Visitors could explore scientific equipment and exhibition materials while learning more about marine biodiversity, citizen science, and the technologies being used to observe coastal ecosystems. Around 60 participants joined the event, including members of the Svanesunds Sailing Association, Svanesund Boat Club and Svanesund Village Association. The conversations continued both on shore and onboard the sailing vessel Hrimfare, with DiverSea represented by Martin Hassellöv from the University of Gotheburg (UGOT).
These activities offered a different setting for sharing science — bringing DiverSea research directly into local communities and creating space for informal conversations about marine ecosystems, biodiversity monitoring and the role that citizens can play in understanding our seas.
By combining science, sailing and community engagement, DiverSea continues to explore new ways of making marine biodiversity research accessible and inspiring to wider audiences.
