Institute of Marine Biology of the NAS of Ukraine

Institute of Marine Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IMB) is a research institution that conducts complex fundamental and applied studies in various fields of biology and ecology of marine ecosystems. The research of IMB is aimed at studying biodiversity and assessing the bioresource potential of the Black Sea and Azov Sea basin, substantiating methodological aspects of forming a marine ecological network of Ukraine, as well as developing scientific foundations for monitoring of marine ecosystems and environmental management. IMB focuses on the fundamental basis of structural and functional organization of marine ecosystems and estuaries under conditions of climatic changes and anthropogenic load.

Role in DiverSea

IMB's responsibilities in DiverSea encompass identifying essential variables and indicators within MSFD descriptors for three specific case studies in the region (WP1), as well as supplying data for the DiverSea database (WP2). Their field study strategy revolves around employing fundamental methodological approaches to assess the functional biodiversity of plankton and benthos across three polygons representing different categories of Ecological Status Class, thereby establishing an ideal disturbance gradient. These indicators will be used in WP4 for stakeholder modelling and provided to key beneficiaries of ecosystem services in the shallow shelf regions of the Northwestern Black Sea (WP4). IMB collaborates closely with regional partners spanning the Black Sea, Aegean Sea, and Adriatic Sea to assess functional indicators of biodiversity and develop predictive patterns for scenario building in the region (WP3, WP4).
